Taxes and Incentives

Alberta has one of the most competitive tax environments in North America. It is the only province in Canada that does not have a provincial retail sales tax and there are no provincial capital or payroll taxes, which are common in many other provinces and U.S.A.

Tax Competitiveness

  • Combined federal/provincial corporate tax rate of 25% (compared to an average of 39% combined federal/state corporate tax rate in the United States)
  • Small business combined corporate tax rate (companies less than $500,000) of 14%
  • Manufacturing and processing provincial tax rate of 10%
  • Provincial corporate income tax rate of 10%, the lowest among Canadian provinces
  • Canada is one of the top three countries in the world offering the lowest effective corporate tax rate for manufacturing operations

Government Programs

There are a number of grants and government support programs which are available to subsidize the cost of doing business in our region.
  • Canada-Alberta Job Grant
    • The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is an employer-driven training program. The Canada-Alberta Job Grant will help employers develop workers to suit their needs and provide people with the jobs they need to succeed.
  • Western Innovation Initiative
    • WINN is a $100 million five-year federal initiative that offers repayable contributions for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with operations in Western Canada. Funding is provided to move new and innovative technologies from the later stages of research and development to the marketplace.
  • Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC)
    • Since 2010, the CCEMC has been funding projects across the innovation scale, from early stages to commercialization. With a mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change, the CCEMC has supported innovation that reflects the province’s climate change strategy.
  • Scientific Research and Experimental Development
    • The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Program is a federal tax incentive program, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, that encourages Canadian businesses of all sizes, and in all sectors to conduct research and development (R&D) in Canada. It is the largest single source of federal government support for industrial R&D.
