Business Sectors

Agriculture and Forestry

The Agri-Business sector is one of the founding business sectors of Alberta, originating with westward travelling settlers.  Those settlers transformed the wind-swept plains of Alberta into endless fields of grain with entire herds of livestock grazing nearby.  Companies included in this sector are involved in a wide range of agricultural operations, from the research and development of new agriculture technologies and supplies to the production, processing and distribution of agricultural products.

Agri-Business also includes the science, art, and business of cultivating soil, producing crops, and raising livestock.  The size of businesses in this sector range from small, family-based operations to corporately run research facilities dedicated to encouraging the growth and expansion of this vital industry in highly competitive domestic and global markets.

Labour Opportunities

Employment opportunities abound for this sector in Alberta's International Region.  A wide variety of general positions are available, but specifically salespeople are in great demand, particularly those who have extensive experience in dealing with livestock.  Individuals highly skilled in farm equipment also have a distinct advantage.  Several initiatives in the region are focused around soil conservation, educating individuals to manage their land more effectively and help reduce soil erosion.
