Village of New Sarepta

Village of New Sarepta - Smile! You're in New Sarepta

The thriving Village of New Sarepta derived its name from a group of Russian settlers trying to decide on a name that would be easy to pronounce in English as well as other languages.  Sarepta was chosen but when Alberta became a province in 1905, a new name needed to be chosen as there was already a Sarepta in Ontario.  "New" was added to honour the Moravian brethren who founded Sarepta, Russia, on the Volga River.

New Sarepta's economy is based largely on agriculture, with many of the local amenities focused on encouraging growth in that sector.

New Sarepta is also currently focusing its attention on four, key initiatives for economic development:

  • Residential Development
  • Commercial Development
  • Tourism and Trade
  • Beautification of the Village of New Sarepta

"The railway, built in 1912, provided a nucleus for a town and homesteaders were quick to make the area a farming community.  This thriving Village is striving to become "Cartoon Capital of Canada". Visit its famous Fence of Fame. Many of the walls in the New Sarepta High School are adorned with original cartoon murals created by Yardley Jones."
